A charcoal pencil set is sold in one of two physical forms, and the grade decides what the tool can do. Most quotations name neither. A price for “charcoal” is a price for a guess.
This guide is written for buyers assembling a charcoal line: art-material distributors, stationery wholesalers, school suppliers and studio retailers. It covers how the grade families in a real range differ, what pencil and stick formats are for, how the kits are put together, and what has to be fixed on paper before a quotation is worth comparing.
The grade is the product line, not a footnote
Charcoal is graded by hardness, and in a wholesale range the grades are sold as separate products rather than as one product with a choice attached. Our own line runs it both ways: single-hardness sets, and sets that carry a mixed range of grades in one pack.
| Set in the range | Pieces | Grade family |
|---|---|---|
| Artist charcoal pencils, soft hardness leads | 12 | soft |
| Artist charcoal pencils, middle hardness leads | 12 | middle |
| Artist charcoal pencils, hard hardness leads | 12 | hard |
| Artist charcoal pencils, mixed hardness leads | 12 | mixed |
| Colored charcoal pencils, 3 hardness | 12 | three grade |
| Charcoal pencil set, soft medium hard grades | 12 | soft / medium / hard |
Read the first four rows together. Same body, same piece count, four products. A buyer listing “a charcoal pencil set” has listed one of six. The mixed-hardness pack is the one a retail shelf usually wants; the single-grade packs are what a studio reorders, because a drawing course buys soft by the box and hard by the box, not one of each.
White charcoal is the exception that proves the rule: it is not a softer grade, it is a different job. A white charcoal pencil sits on top of dark tone to lift highlights, which is why it is stocked as its own set rather than as a grade inside a graded pack.
All of these formats sit in one place on our own site โ the sketch tools set category โ which is the list a buyer should work from rather than a single product page.
The commercial consequence is simple. If the grade is not on the purchase order, the supplier packs from the mixed carton and the account discovers the difference at the shelf.

Pencil or stick: the format decides the buyer
The second decision is physical. A charcoal tool is either a pencil with a wooden casing, or a bare stick that is held directly or wrapped in paper.
| Format in the range | Pieces | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Compressed charcoal sticks | 6 | bare sticks, for broad coverage and strong dark tone |
| White charcoal pencils for drawing highlights | 12 | highlight work over dark tone |
| White charcoal pencil pen | 6 | the same job in the small pack |
| Wide sketching pencils with charcoal | 9 + 3 | wide graphite bodies with charcoal pencils in one set |
| Charcoal drawing set for sketching and shading | 7 | a compact starter set |
The pencil is the format for control: a cased core holds a point, and a point is what a buyer needs when the account is teaching or illustrating. The stick is the format for coverage: compressed charcoal sticks cover an area quickly and lay down the darkest tones in the range, which is why they are sold by the six rather than by the dozen alongside pencils.
Two details decide which format a market takes. The first is what the account already owns: a classroom that sharpens pencils will not reorder sticks, and a studio that works with a blender will not go back to a cased core. The second is the transport question โ a bare stick has no casing to protect it, so the packing has to do the work that the wood does in a pencil. Ask how the sticks are held in the pack before you compare prices.

Kits: the set is the product, not the pieces
Above the single-format sets, the range carries kits that exist because the buyer does not want to assemble a drawing set from parts.
| Kit in the range | Pieces | What is in it |
|---|---|---|
| Professional sketching pencil set with charcoal pencils and sharpener | 17 | graded pencils, charcoal pencils, a sharpener |
| Artist sketching tools with charcoal, graphite and drawing pencils | 35 | a full drawing toolkit |
| Charcoal and graphite pencil set | mixed | charcoal and graphite together |
| Charcoal sticks with eraser and sketch book | mixed | sticks, an eraser, a sketch book |
The kit question is a channel question. A retailer and a gift buyer want the 35-piece box, because the box is what sits on the shelf and the photograph on the carton does the selling. A school supplier usually wants the 17-piece set, where the sharpener is the piece that stops the account complaining about points. The kit that bundles a sketch book and an eraser is the one for the beginner channel, where the buyer has nothing yet.
What a buyer should pin down is the component list, not the piece count. Two kits with thirty-five pieces are not the same product if one of them counts a bag and a sharpener as pieces.
The specification sheet to send a supplier
Six lines are the minimum for a charcoal pencil set, and the two most often left off are the last two.
| Line | What to write | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Grade | soft, middle, hard, or a mixed pack | sets the drawing behaviour and the price band |
| Format | pencil, or compressed sticks | decides the account it can serve |
| Piece count | the count in the pack | separates products that share a name |
| Kit contents | the component list for boxed sets | stops two kits being quoted as one |
| Point protection | how the cores are held in the pack | broken cores are a transit cost, not a defect |
| Packing | inner pack, carton, and the reorder multiple | sets how a school buys and reorders |
What goes wrong after the container lands
Cores that arrive broken. A cased charcoal core is brittle. If the pencils in a boxed kit are loose in the carton, the breakage shows up at the customer rather than at the port. Ask what holds the set in place.
Sticks that arrive as dust. A bare compressed stick needs protection the wood does not provide. The six-piece pack has to be built for it.
Grade drift between deliveries. Soft is a range, not a number. The second order that is a little harder than the first is the complaint that costs the most, because it is invisible on the invoice. Keep the approved sample and compare against it.
A reorder named only by piece count. As the table above shows, a 12-piece set can be four different products. Write the grade and the format on the order, every time.
Sourcing a charcoal line
Search wording matters more in this category than in most, because the demand arrives in so many forms. The same product is asked for as a charcoal pencil set, as a charcoal pencil set soft medium hard, as a charcoal pencil set professional sketching, and as compressed charcoal for drawing. A wholesale buyer adds its own wording on top: a charcoal pencil set bulk enquiry, a charcoal sticks wholesale enquiry, a custom charcoal pencil brief, or a straight approach to a charcoal pencil manufacturer. One page that answers all of them beats six that answer one.
